Samsung Galaxy S now available on Globe for pre-order

by on Jun.16, 2010, under Gadgets, Reviews, Tech

When I was passing by Greenbelt 3 to get to Greenbelt 1, I noticed a “new” Globe hub on the way. It’s beside Powerbooks, in front of b_connected, near Healthy Options, etc..

It’s nothing new, I pass by Globe stores all the time but this one got my attention.

globe greenbelt 3It’s an advertisement for the Samsung Galaxy S!

So I went in. Circled the display looking for the phone. And at the middle there is the beautiful phone. Three of them 🙂

I picked one and meddled with it.

It’s bigger than the iPhone but a bit lighter and thinner (than 3Gs?).

It’s a shiny piece of black glass. And I mean shiny.

The screen is all black when the screen is off but when it turns on all you can notice is the screen and nothing but the screen!

The screen is AMOLED and it’s very very nice! Everything is crisp and vibrant!

And very captivating as well

But unlike the new iPhone 4, you can still see the pixels upon REAL CLOSE UP!

It’s very prone to smudges as you can see from the video and photos.

The Samsung Galaxy S packs the following features:

  • 1GHz Cortex-A8 based processor “Hummingbird” with integrated graphics
  • 4.0″ 16M color SUPER AMOLED screen with multi-touch
  • 3.5mm jack
  • micro usb port
  • 5MPx AF camera with tap-to-focus function and shoot vidoes up to 720p at 30FPS
  • 8GB/16GB on-board memory for your media
  • Accelerometer, proximity sensor, digital compass

As for the software:

  • Android 2.1 Eclair with reports of upgrade to 2.2 FroYo
  • Android Samsung UI (Pantheon maybe?)
  • DivX, XviD, MPEG4, H.236, H.234, WMV, VC-1, 3gp, FLV, MKV
  • Flash Lite 3.1 is also integrated into the browser
  • Live wallpapers
  • Layar
  • Swype
  • ThinkFree office app
  • Aldiko e-book reader

Android Live Wallpaper in action.

There is also a list view of the menu if you wanna go old-school or tired of the panes.

Interesting though, the fonts are different. I wonder if you can change the font or it comes bundled with the skin…

If only the phone was configured with the Android Market and WiFi I would have run some benchmarks nyahahaha~!

I wanted to play more with the phone but I was already fondling it for about 20 minutes. I never cared about the iPad that was in front of me :-p

I wanted to say more about this phone but I had spent only so little time with it.

I’m definitely gonna buy this phone maybe December or on my birthday, March.

I’m still waiting for the price to settle down 🙂

Unless of course the Droid X will be released here with a better competitive price by that time. I won’t hesitate to buy the Droid X if it’s around 30k, give or take 5k.

And I’m gonna be waiting for this dock.

It’s really drooling! hahaha

As for the price…

I asked the sales lady on when is the availability of the Galaxy S.

She told me it was available since June 3 on pre-order. And the price is: Php 31,000!

She said that you can also avail of this phone at 0% interest on a 12-month payment.

I also asked if when I will get the phone. She said that it’s on “reservation with the source” and you can get the phone in 1-2 weeks.

Now, I don’t know if the price she said was on contract. I hope it isn’t!

I don’t care if it’s locked to Globe. I’m on Globe anyway.

And on December, I hope they bundle the dock with the phone or something.

And that dock! I hope it’s gonna be cheaper than what I’m thinking.

There’s a lot of hoping going on here… hehe’

Anyway, let’s just hope wish for the best.

A lot of Android goodness awaits our future ^^,

I’ve been waiting for this phone for months already. Much hype has been given on it’s Super AMOLED screen (like the Samsung Wave), but I guess that wasn’t enough to create a crave for the device (given the iPhone 4 is much popular).

I saddens me to “hear” that Globe will be exclusively dishing this phone out. I am hoping that Samsung Philippines will release an unlocked version locally. I really really do.

Your post made me think about switching back to Globe, but the phone would be such a waste if it will only work for one network, wouldn’t you agree?

I believe, for these kinds of handsets, the user shouldn’t be limited to a single network. One should have freedom to choose which provider he chooses.

But the iPhone isn’t the same, isn’t it? LOL.

it’s only available to globe right now so they have that “premium”.
knowing samsung they’re gonna release it unlocked after a few weeks or a month or so..
let’s just wait until it is released in singapore then the prices are sure gonna drop.

I am a existing Omnia (910) user on Verizon who was very disappointed with Windows Mobile 6.1 and Samsung’s shell. Wound up paying for SPB Mobile Shell to acquire a usable interface and had to abandon Exchange e mail on account of security restrictions. Basically anytime you tried to place or obtain a call, you needed to enter your PIN and I was missing calls being a result. Lastly made a decision to abandon smartphones for your time being (economic factors) and wait for a fantastic Android product. The Galaxy S (Facinate) need to fit the bill. Disappointed to hear with the GPS troubles. Let me add that Verizon’s 3G service was outstanding throughout and I eventually stopped employing WiFi because V3G was a lot rapidly enough for me.Interestingly, I’m employing the Omnia as being a wireless product close to the home for checking e-mail, Twitter, Facebook and uncomplicated browsing. But not as being a telephone!

i think you are happy with your X10 and HTC EVO, Margert. Just uninstall the Yahoo Maps! LOL!
anyhoo.. i really don’t know how you and why you have to enter your PIN everytime you need to answer a call or place a call. you must have done something to the settings.. i suggest you go the verizon and let them remove that or flash your omnia with a custom winmo or something..
and thanks for the info about the gps problem of the galaxy s (fascinate)…
and good to hear that you are happy with verizon! i don’t live in the US but if i were there verizon wouldn’t be my network because i need to buy another phone for that network. my phones are GSM and works all over the world EXCEPT on Verizon and Sprint!!!
